Born in South-Korea, Hayoung Lee studied at Yon Sei University, the Korean National University of Arts, and at the National Opera Studio, London.
As she was a member of the Royal Opera House Vilar Young Artists Programme (2002 to 2005) she has been singing at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden roles such as Naiade in Ariadne auf Naxos, Lucia in The Rape of Lucretia and has been covering Olympia in Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Fiakermilli in Arabella, Violetta Valery in La Traviata, Queen of Night in Die Zauberflöte, Ophélie in Hamlet and Sophie in Werther.
At the Royal Opera House she also sang Bubikopf in Viktor Ullmann's opera Der Kaiser von Atlantis and the title role of La princesse Orphée by Philip Glass. In 2005 she won the audience prize at the singing competition » BBC Cardiff Singer of the World« and was heard the same year on the BBC in Fauré’s Requiem. She has been giving various concerts in Germany, South Korea, at the Edinburgh Festival including a gala with Bryn Terfel in Faenol (Wales). In April 2009 she was awarded the Dr. Wilhelm Oberdörffer prize as new artistic talent.
In September 2005 she joined the Ensemble at Hamburg State Opera where she performed, amongst others, Violetta in La Traviata, Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro, Tytania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Badi’at in Henze’s L’upupa (German premiere), Gilda in Rigoletto, Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier, Adina in L’elisir d’amore, Nannetta in Falstaff, Olympia in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Oscar in Un Ballo in Maschera, Sœur Constance in Dialogues des Carmélites, Woglinde in Das Rheingold, Waldvogel in Siegfried and Gretel in Hänsel und Gretel.
She was highly praised for her performances at the Semperoper Dresden as Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro, the Volksoper Wien as Violetta in La Traviata and at the Aalto-Musiktheater in Essen as Tytania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
In the season 2009/10, Hayoung Lee had a great success as Lucia in a new production of the original version of Lucia di Lammermoor at the Hamburg State Opera.
In 2010/11 she performed the revivals of Lucia di Lammermoor and La Traviata in Hamburg and could be heard in two new productions there: as Honey B. in the German premiere of Brett Dean’s Bliss as well as Woglinde in Götterdämmerung.
In January 2012, Hayoung Lee received rave reviews for her debut as Cordelia in a new production of Reimann’s Lear at the Hamburg State Opera.
Engagements in 2012 include Zerbinetta in a new production of Ariadne auf Naxos as well as revivals of Bliss and Lucia di Lammermoor at the Hamburg State Opera and Violetta in La Traviata at the Vienna Volksoper.
Upcoming role debuts include Marguerite in Faust, Vixen in The Cunning little Wixen and Donna Anna in Don Giovanni.
On the concert platform she will appear in Brisbane in Mahler 2nd Symphony as well as in Das Rheingold under the baton of Simone Young.
CD releases include Woglinde in Das Rheingold and Waldvogel in Siegfried as well as Cordelia in Reimann’s Lear under the baton of Simone Young (Oehms Classics).
