Sébastien Soulès

Baritone

Sébastien Soulès was born in Orléans (France) and studied singing at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, as well as at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin with Prof. Harald Stamm. Masterclasses with Walter Berry, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Brigitte Fassbaender and Jose van Dam.

Most recently he was highly successful in the title role of Enescu's "Oedipe" at Theater Altenburg-Gera, as Vicomte de Fontrailles in Gounod's "Cinq-Mars" at Oper Leipzig, as Kaspar in a NP "Der Freischütz" at Bühne Baden and as Scarpia in Puccini's "Tosca" and as Golaud in the NP "Pélleas et Mélisande" at the new Opera house Linz and in the title role of Berg's "Wozzeck" at Theater Augsburg.

Also great recent successes include Hidraot in Gluck's "Armide" in Bern, "The Man of La Mancha" (Don Quixote) in Biel, Kurwenal at Teatr Wielki Warsaw and Ruprecht in "L'ange de Feu" by Sergej Prokofiev in the production of Silviu Purcărete at the renowned opera festival in Miskolc / Hungary, Count Homonay in Strauss' "Der Zigeunerbaron" at Langenlois Festival and in the world premiere of Raquel García-Tomás´ "Displace" at the Festival Musiktheatertage Wien and at the Teatro Real Madrid.

In summer 2016 he was heard as Orazio in the highly acclaimed NP "Amleto" by Franco Faccio at the Bregenz Festival (including TV broadcast), where he returned in 2017 as Zuniga in the NP "Carmen" and as William Bankes in the UA " To the lighthouse ". Also in 2018 he returns as Zuniga and in the NP "Beatrice Cenci" by Berthold Goldschmidt.

His plans include again Enescus "Oedipe" at Theater Altenburg-Gera and his debut as Don Pizarro in a NP "Fidelio" at Bühne Baden, where he also will perform Kálmán Zsupán in a NP "Der Zigeunerbaron".

2013/2014 has opened in Linz, with the "Schatzgräber" by Schreker and he sang Figaro and Zuniga at the Volksoper Vienna, Escamillo at the Opera de Tours, Mitterhofer in "Elegie für junge Liebende" by Henze in Wiesbaden and he could be heard in the world premiere of "Moby Dick" in Warsaw and as Kaspar in „Der Freischütz“ at the Styriarte in Graz.

In 2013 he performed the title role in Wagner's "Flying Dutchman" for the first time in Hildesheim, Germany, also in an original production at the well­known Wiener Festwochen festival, and at the Graz Styrian festival, in Offenbach's "Barbe­-Bleue", conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt, in the role of Popolani.

In the 2011/2012 season he performed the title role in Friedrich Cerha's "Baal" in Vienna, and he also played at Vienna's Volksoper in "Carmen", "Gianni Schicchi" and "Tosca". He was the first French singer ever to perform the title role of Mozart's Figaro in Vienna, in a new production of Vienna's Volksoper, directed by Marco Arturo Marelli.

2010/2011 Sébastien Soulès has had big success as Don Giovanni and Marcello ("La Bohème") at the opera house of Halle, and as Albert in  Massenet's "Werther“ at the theatre of Koblenz. At the international May Festival Wiesbaden (State Opera of Wiesbaden), he sang the role of Humbert Humbert in Shchedrin's opera "Lolita“ under the baton of Marc Piollet, directed by Konstanze Lauterbach. In Summer 2011, he performed the role of Figaro ("Le Nozze di Figaro") at the open air festival of Klosterneuburg (Austria).

Sébastien Soulès is a winner of the Willi-Domgraf-Fassbaender singing competition, Munich.  Munich.
