Katherine Lerner

Hailed for her voice of "gleaming black lacquer," mezzo-soprano Katherine Lerner wields her richly hued instrument with sensitivity and expression.

2014 brought her to the Metropolitan Opera, covering the roles of Olga in Eugene Onegin and Bersi in Andrea Chenier.

A graduate of the Lyric Opera of Chicago's Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center, she sang numerous roles on the Lyric's mainstage during her three year tenure and afterwards.

Perhaps the brightest Lyric triumph was the opportunity to portray Siébel in Gounod's Faust under the baton of Sir Andrew Davis. The mezzo's characterization and vocal abilities were widely praised. Chicago Classical Review described her performance as: "agile and aptly boyish...her youthful mezzo and spirited vocalism fully deserving of Siébel's rarely heard second aria, Si le bonheur."

Prior to her acceptance into the Ryan Opera Center, Miss Lerner received her Masters in Opera from the Curtis Institute of Music, and her Bachelors in Voice from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Miss Lerner recently received a Richard F. Gold Career Grant, as well as awards from the Opera Columbus, Opera Birmingham, and Florida Grand Opera competitions. She is also the recipient of the Grand Prize from the Union League Civic and Arts Foundation, and the Edith Newfield Award from the Musicians Club of Women.

The mezzo is an accomplished recitalist, having honed her skills at the Music Academy of the West and the Steans Institute at Ravinia. She has performed with top-tier orchestras around the country, including the San Francisco Symphony, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Cleveland Orchestra. This past spring she performed in a Gypsy themed concert with the New York-based concert series Ridotto, singing songs by Dvorak and Brahms, as well as the mezzo-soprano soloist in Verdi’s Requiem with the Princeton Symphony. Season highlights also included the role of Witch in Knoxville Opera’s Hansel and Gretel and the role of Erna in Georg Haas’ Morgen und Abend with the Theater und Orchester Heidelberg.

In 2017/18 Ms. Lerner joined the Ensemble at the Landestheater Linz (Austria) as a Dramatic Mezzo. Future roles there include Amme/ Frau ohne Schatten, Brängane/ Tristan und Isolde, Gertrude/ Hänsel und Gretel, and Larina/ Eugene Onegin, among others.
