Martin Iliev was born in Kazanlak, Bulgaria. He studied at the National Music Academy "Prof. Pancho Vladigerov "in Sofia with Resa Koleva.
He began his singing career as a baritone with parts like Don Giovanni, Figaro ("Il barbiere di Siviglia"), Enrico ("Lucia di Lammermoor"), Nabucco, Ezio ("Attila"), Don Carlo, Conte di Luna, Rigoletto, Macbeth, Rodrigo ("Don Carlo") and Jago ("Otello").
In 2005 he made a change into a dramatic tenor. He made his debut as tenor at the State Opera Stara Zagora, Bulgaria as Pinkerton in "Madama Butterfly". His repertoire includes, among others, Pollione, Manrico, Don Carlo, Radames, Otello, Des Grieux, Cavaradossi, Calaf, Turiddu, Don José, Siegmund, Siegfried and Tristan.
Martin Iliev has been involved several times in radio and television recordings of concerts and operas in Bulgaria. He is a soloist at the Sofia National Opera. He is a regular guest in various European countries as well as in the USA and Japan. As a concert singer, he could be heard in Bulgaria, Italy, Spain, Belarus and the Czech Republic.
In the season 2015/2016 he sang Tristan at the Festival in Ljubljana, Siegmund ("Die Walküre") and Siegfried ("Götterdämmerung") at the Füssen Festival, Calaf at the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan and Cavaradossi at the Sofia National Opera. In 2015 he received the most important music award in Bulgaria, the "Crystal Lyre".
In the season 2016/2017 he made his highly successful debut as Tannhäuser at the Chemnitz Opera and sang his first Parsifal at the National Opera Sofia.
In 2017/18 he returned to Chemnitz as Tannhäuser and gave his successful debut at the famous Bolshoi theatre as Siegfried and Siegmund.
In 2018/19 he will sing Siegfried in Siegfried and Götterdämmerung at Theater Chemnitz and will give his debut at Staatstheater Kassel as Siegmund.
