Sonja Gornik


Before her pregnancy, Sonja Gornik had very successful debuts as Brünnhilde in Wagner's „Die Walküre“ and „Siegfried“ (stage director: Uwe Eric Laufenberg; conductor: Alexander Joel) in the season 2016/17 at the Staatstheater Wiesbaden. In the same season, she also jumped in for the Brünnhilde in Wagner's „Götterdämmerung“ at the same opera house.

In spring 2019 she returns to the stage with her debut as Irene in R. Wagner´s Rienzi at Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern, her plans include also Puccini´s Tosca in Augsburg and Wagner´s Brünnhilde at in Aachen.

in 1015/16 the German soprano gave a very successful house – and role debut as Isabella (Das Liebesverbot - Richard Wagner) at the Teatro Real Madrid (stage director: Kasper Holten; conductor: Ivor Bolton). This was also a co-production with Covent Garden, London.

From 2012 Sonja Gorniks international reputation blossomed, since she jumped in as Lucilla (Il burbero di buon cuore - Martin y Soler) at the Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona. Consequently she returned the next season and made her debut as Freia in Robert Carsens production of Wagner's „Das Rheingold" in 2013. The director Joan Matabosch (Barcelona) then moved to Teatro Real Madrid, as director and engaged Sonja 2015/2016 to cover Leonore (Fidelio - Beethoven).

From the season 2013/14 Sonja joined the ensemble in the newly built opera house in Linz, “Neues Musiktheater Linz" (Austria) for two years. Her debut as Sieglinde (Die Walküre - Richard Wagner) enjoyed wonderful success. Also for her interpretation of Tosca, received Sonja Gornik much acclaim from the austrian public. A gala performance of Tosca was given to her with the celebrated star tenor José Cura. In Linz, her repertoire in Wagner roles grew, as she sang again not only Freia (Das Rheingold), but also Sieglinde (Walküre; and cover of Ortlinde), Gutrune and 3.Norn (Götterdämmerung).

Before her engagement in Linz, Sonja Gornik, performed many major soprano roles, as Floria Tosca (Tosca), Cio-Cio-San (Madame Butterfly), Agathe (Der Freischütz), Tatjana (Eugen Onegin), Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni) and Rosalinde (Die Fledermaus) at the Theater Lüneburg (Germany). Here she had been part of the ensemble from 2010/2011 until 2012/2013. September 2015, saw Sonja Gornik return with acclaimed success as a guest, with Leonore (Fidelio).

Regular guest engagements throughout Germany have seen Sonja perform at the Opera houses in Frankfurt, Darmstadt and in Kiel, and at the Ludwigsburger Festspiele.

Sonja Gornik is also well known on the concert platform with appearances in major cities in Germany including München (Gasteig – Münchner Symphoniker), Berlin, "Konzerthaus" (2012) where she sang "Die vier letzten Lieder" (Richard Strauss), St. Petersburg, Hamburg “Laeiszhalle”, Cologne („Das Neue Orchester Köln“). She also sang with the "Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester Frankfurt" conductor Heribert Beissel (Live on TV, RBB) and with the „Aalborg Symfoniorkester“ in Denmark conducted by Gregor Bühl (Live on Danish Radio).

Recognition for her outstanding talent came, in the form of prizes and scholarships, from the „Mozart Prisma“ (National Theater Mannheim), the Richard-Wagner-Verband Wiesbaden, the Villa Musica in Mainz, the „Walther Kaminsky Foundation” Munich and Meistersinger Competition in Neustadt where she was awarded with the first prize and the prize of the audience.Sonja Gorniks formal music studies took place in Music Colleagues both in Mainz (Prof. Claudia Eder) and in Graz (Prof. Claudia Rüggeberg). During her studies in Mainz she was a member of the Young Ensemble at the Staatstheater Mainz.
